The Trail of Broken Pieces is a workbook designed to be used in small group settings. The goal of the workbook is to help people who have lived or currently are living life through a cycle of painful and traumatic experiences.
This workbook has three primary objectives for the reader:
- Recognize unhealthy repetitive life cycles
- Understand how pain and wounds hinder us spiritually
- Learn how to be set free from spiritual and emotional strongholds
All of us experience painful things throughout the course of life. Though we may try our best to avoid these experiences, we quickly realize there is nothing we can do to avoid them and realize that pain is an inevitable part of life.
Even though we all experience pain, the way it affects each person can be different. Although there may have been some healing in the past, some people may still experience feelings of bondage and need further healing from those experiences. We cannot put ourselves on a specific time-table for healing to occur, nor should others push us in the healing process. Everyone will approach this in a way that is right for them and, for some, it may take a little longer to get where they want to be.
Small group involvement is a healthy approach to the healing process because it helps the participants to:
- Share openly and honestly within a safe environment
- Recognize that they are not alone in what they are experiencing
- Experience the love and support of others

The Trail of Broken Pieces is divided into two sections. The first section primarily addresses unhealthy life cycles. Unhealthy life cycles are the repetition of damaging life values that are passed from one person to another. Life values are passed from generation to generation. Those values, whether good or bad, shape our character and instill within us what we will believe from the beginning of our childhood into our adulthood. Unfortunately, depending on the healthiness or unhealthiness of the people passing on these values, they will either build up or tear down the identity of the person receiving them.
Working through these beliefs will open the eyes of the participants, helping them to identify what is true and what is a lie, which helps move them toward freedom and healing.
I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength… Ephesians 1:18-19
The second section, Matters of the Heart primarily addresses the condition of our heart emotionally and spiritually. Recognizing how we got to where we are is one part of the journey, but it is also equally important for us to know what has to change so we can be set free.
Processing the condition of our heart is critical if we are to restore our relationship with others and with God. Our spiritual freedom is the key to our emotional freedom. We cannot heal ourselves, and the sooner we realize that we are helpless to do this in our own strength, the more likely we will align ourselves with God’s way of doing things!
The healing process requires addressing both sections. If we try to rush the process by eliminating the parts that are uncomfortable to us, we will run the risk of our healing being incomplete and possibly cycling through the same patterns again.
Our healing lies within our choice to either press ahead or stay where we are. No one can make that choice for us. Do not be too quick to give up too soon. There is usually an emotional and spiritual curve that we will face if we are to prevail. That curve most generally involves perseverance and steadfastness in the process. If we give up too quickly, we may miss what is around the corner.
Remember, healing requires two steps: looking back and reaching forward. We usually need to look back just long enough to give us the tools to reach forward. We should never stay in one place for too long; it is not healthy emotionally or spiritually.
Change is available for all of us if we really want it! But we do not have to do it by ourselves. There is good news for all of you who press into this journey of healing. It will be challenging but there are great benefits waiting for you at the end. Remember, you are not alone! There are others to help you and a loving God walking beside you every step of the way.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21
